New mesh retouching tools

DJI released version 1.7.0 of its Modify 3D post-processing software on 27 October 2026. The announcement reported by DroneDJ details three common photogrammetry problems: holes in the mesh, distorted vertices and irregular edges. The update brings hole-filling, vertex-smoothing and edge-trimming tools, accessible from a dedicated toolbar. The user can select areas of the model – for example a damaged section – and apply one of these operations. Changes are made in real time, without exporting to third-party software.

According to DJI, the smoothing and hole-filling controls are adjustable: the smoothing intensity and the maximum diameter of holes to be filled can be adjusted. Edge trimming removes the peripheral artefacts generated during reconstruction, saving time for operators who until now had to manually rework each model.

System requirements and integration

The terms of use for DJI Modify are detailed in the official FAQ. The software runs exclusively on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. The minimum RAM is 32 GB; for heavy models, DJI recommends 64 GB. On the GPU side, an NVIDIA card with Compute Capability 6.1 or higher and at least 4 GB of VRAM is required (equivalent to a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti). For heavy models, DJI recommends a GPU with Compute Capability 7.0 or higher and 8 GB of VRAM (GeForce RTX 2070 or higher). The NVIDIA driver version must be at least 522.25.

The software integrates into the DJI Terra workflow: 3D models generated by Terra (meshes or point clouds) can be opened directly in Modify. DJI currently offers a free public beta, activated via a code on the enterprise website. At the end of the test phase, a transition to a paid licence will be necessary. Perpetual licences are already available from authorised resellers such as DroneBase, often bundled with Terra Flagship in package offers.

Compatibility and limitations

DJI Modify was designed for data from the DJI ecosystem. The question of compatibility with point clouds or meshes produced by other software (Agisoft Metashape, Pix4D, RealityCapture) remains unresolved. DJI does not publish an official list of supported formats other than those generated by Terra. Operators who wish to use Modify with third-party sources must therefore test it themselves, as there is no guarantee.

Resource consumption is high. The minimum configurations – 32 GB of RAM and 4 GB of VRAM – can max out on models exceeding several hundred million polygons. DJI recommends 64 GB of RAM and 8 GB of VRAM for professional use. No macOS or Linux version has been announced. In addition, the software requires the display to be connected to the NVIDIA card rather than the integrated GPU, an additional constraint on some laptops.

Relevance for mapping and inspection missions

The new tools in Modify 1.7.0 are aimed at professionals who deliver 3D models to their clients: civil engineering design offices, infrastructure inspectors and surveyors. Reducing post-processing time is a direct issue, particularly for operators using DJI M30 series and M300 RTK platforms. Demand for these drones, capable of carrying onboard computing power for advanced algorithms, is rising sharply, while Phantom 4 and Mavic 2 models are declining. This trend makes Modify all the more useful for processing the data volumes generated by these recent sensors (Zenmuse P1, L2).

By integrating cleaning and finishing directly into Modify, operators avoid resorting to third-party software such as Blender or Meshlab, which streamlines the production chain. For fleet operators, perpetual licences (without subscription) make it possible to control costs. For now, version 1.7.0 is accessible via the public beta programme; DJI has not announced a final release date or pricing for the full licence.
