On 14 October 2026, DJI lifted the veil on the Dock 4 and the Matrice 5TD — the evolution of the most widely deployed drone-in-a-box solution for surveillance and inspection. Here are the new features announced, cross-checked against the international press review.

The Dock 4: the station that swaps batteries in 25 seconds

The structural change: the Dock 4 is the first DJI dock with automatic battery swapping. Where the Dock 2 and Dock 3 recharged the battery inside the docked aircraft (around 27 to 30 minutes between two flights), the Dock 4 extracts the pack and inserts a charged one in 25 seconds — less than 45 seconds from touchdown to take-off according to DJI's measurements. The station stores up to three batteries and charges two simultaneously.

Other changes vs the Dock 3:

  • Extended temperature range: -40 °C to +50 °C (battery preheating in extreme cold, integrated air conditioning in high heat)
  • Separate O4 Ground Station: video and RTK transmission moved into a unit connected to the dock by a simple Ethernet cable (power included) — antenna and dock can each be positioned at the best spot, including near tall buildings
  • Stored batteries = backup power for the dock (~4.5 h per battery)
  • Wi-Fi QuickTransfer: media offload at up to 80 MB/s after landing
  • Sub-2 GHz video link for better resistance to interference
  • Designed for DFR (dock-as-first-responder): public safety, emergency response, infrastructure inspection, night security, mapping
  • Compatibility warning: the Dock 4 only works with the Matrice 5TD. The Matrice 4D/4TD remain on the Dock 3. The Dock 3's 400 × 400 mm wall mount is retained.

The Matrice 5TD: enriched sensors by day and by night

The new aircraft (2.6 kg, IP55) brings the following compared with the Matrice 4TD:

  • Native 1280 × 1024 thermal camera (vs 640 × 512 on the 4TD, i.e. 4× more pixels; 2560 × 2048 in UHR mode), visible/thermal fusion, night zoom
  • 11× telephoto lens (252 mm equivalent), three 50 MP visible cameras, laser rangefinder up to 3,000 m
  • Flight time up to 59 minutes (vs 54 for the 4TD)
  • Rotating LiDAR + mmWave radar (3 directions) + 6-direction vision: detection of thin obstacles (cables) even in complex environments
  • 450 g payload on three mounting points (top and sides): AS2D speaker, AL2D spotlight, AP1 parachute (supplied fitted as standard in Europe/UK with an independent flight-termination system — a key point for BVLOS approvals)
  • Onboard AI: detection of 17 object types in real time (vehicles, boats, animals...), text or image object search in FlightHub 2, SMS/email alerts
  • Dual integrated 4G module, EU class C5 and C6 certification
  • Deployment speed up to 21 m/s towards the scene; drone-to-cloud latency reduced by 32% (160 ms)

  • Helicomicro (France) — use-case framing: mapping, security and verification of alerts, inspections of difficult environments, detection of incipient fires. The outlet also highlights the product's certification by several independent companies on data security — a response to recurring criticism of DJI, even if it will not reopen the US market.
  • Heliguy (United Kingdom) — detailed comparisons Dock 4 vs Dock 3 and Matrice 5TD vs 4TD; an important point for existing fleets: the 5TD is a dock drone, not flyable in manual mode (apart from a limited emergency mode via RC Plus 2, planned by firmware at the end of October). The 4TD remains versatile for manual flight + Dock 3.
  • Blog Nouvelles Technologies (France) — a pro-consumer reading of the system: the central argument is continuity of service — the drone becomes a near-permanent intervention tool rather than a device that has to be prepared manually.
  • Al-Top (Spain, surveying) — geospatial angle: survey accuracy up to 10 cm at 12 MP, 3 km telemetry, visible/thermal fusion to link a temperature anomaly to the precise element of an installation.
  • PR Newswire (global press release) — EN/FR/DE/APAC versions; official positioning "always-ready aerial support" and availability through authorised DJI Enterprise resellers (project pricing, no public list prices).
  • Yonhap (South Korea) — the press release picked up in the Asian press, a sign of worldwide targeting beyond Europe.

  • The US market remains closed: the FCC Covered List (December 2025) prevents any new authorisation for DJI equipment — no mainstream outlet noted that the Dock 4 is therefore clearly aimed at Europe/Asia.
  • Ecosystem lock-in: a Dock 4 buyer commits to a single-drone fleet (5TD only). DJI's strategy segments the market: Dock 3/4TD for flexibility, Dock 4/5TD for advanced automation.
